Mendes France, Member of Old French Jewish Family, Faces Court Martial

Former Deputy Mendes France, member of one of the oldest Jewish families in Bayonne, will shortly be court-martialed on a charge of deserting the army, it was officially stated today.

The wife and son of Andre Albert Blumel, former director of the Blum Cabinet, have been arrested and imprisoned at Perpignan, southern France, it was learned here today.

Both left France and went to Spain sometime last June, but recently were expelled by the Spanish authorities to France. They are now accused of illegally crossing the border.

The number of expropriated Jewish firms reached 2,504 today with publication of a new list of 131 enterprises.

Meanwhile, Raymond Berr, mining engineer, was exempted from the anti-Jewish statute for “conspicuous scientific services” in the field of synthetic carburants.
