Dr. Mendl Elkin, chief librarian of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, died here yesterday at the age of 88. Born in Russia, Dr. Elkin earned a degree in dentistry and practiced in Russia for six years. He then founded the Yiddish Kamar Theatre in St. Petersburg and later in Moscow. He left Russia in 1920 for Poland where he served as president of the Jewish Theatre Actors in Warsaw. He emigrated to the United States in 1923 and had been librarian at YIVO since 1938.
