Pieter Menten, twice convicted of war crimes he committed in the service of the Nazi SS, will appeal to the European Court for Human Rights in Strasbourg against the 10-year sentence imposed on him by a Rotterdam court last June and upheld by the Dutch Supreme Court last week, his lawyer, Louis Van Heyningen said this week.
Menten, 81 and ailing, was found guilty in 1977 of the murder of Jews and others in the Polish village of Podhorodze in July, 1941. But the Supreme Court twice quashed the conviction on technical grounds. Its confirmation of the Rotterdam sentence, which included a 100,000 Guilders fine, foreclosed any further appeals by Menten in Holland.
