Howard M. Metzenbaum, Cleveland businessman, was appointed today by Ohio’s Democratic Governor James J. Gilligan to serve the one – year remaining in the term of Republican Sen. William B. Saxbe when the latter becomes U.S. Attorney General early in Jan. Saxbe is resigning as senator during the first week of Jan. and is expected to be sworn in immediately as President Nixon’s fourth Attorney General. Metzenbaum will then take his seat in the Senate for the remainder of his term which expires Jan. 31, 1975.
Long active in Ohio’s Democratic Party, Metzenbaum has been a member of Ohio’s State Legislature. In a bid for a Senate seat, in 1970, he lost a close race to Republican Sen. Robert Taft Jr. Metzenbaum prominently participated in the caucus of Jewish delegates and alternates during the Democratic National Convention last year in Miami Beach. His presence in the Senate will increase Jewish membership to three. The others are Senators Jacob K. Javits (R.NY) and Abraham Ribicoff (D. Conn). Metzenbaum is the first Jewish Senator from Ohio.
