Mexico Sets First Immigration Quota; East European Countries Limited to 100 Immigrants Yearly

PRESIDENT LAZARO CARDENAS TODAY APPROVED AN IMMIGRATION QUOTA FOR 1938, THE FIRST IN MEXICO’S HISTORY, WHICH MAKES NO RACIAL DISCRIMINATION BUT LIMITS POLAND, RUMANIA, LITHUANIA AND OTHER EAST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES TO 100 IMMIGRANTS EACH PER YEAR.

OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, INCLUDING GERMANY, AUSTRIA, HUNGARY AND FRANCE ARE PERMITTED QUOTAS OF 5,000 YEARLY FOR EACH. NO. LIMITS ARE SET ON IMMIGRATION FROM SPAIN AND LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES.

THE QUOTAS ARE RESTRICTED TO RELATIVES OF RESIDENTS, CAPITALISTS WHO CONFINE THEMSELVES TO THE EXPORT TRADE, AND A FEW OTHER SPECIFIED CATEGORIES.
