Major issues facing the American Jewish community and major developments within the community were studied exhaustively at a two-day regional conference on community relations held here. More than 200 delegates from Detroit, upper Michigan and Ohio participated in the conference.

At a panel on “Religion in the Public Sohools,” it was decided that the traditional American principle of separation of church and state must be maintained and strengthened. In view of the possible unfavorable reactions to attempts to keep religious aspects out of public education, it was decided that the Detroit Jewish Community Council committee on community relations should study and report on the problem of religion in the schools.

“The Impact of Israel on the American Jewish Community,” “The Failure of Democratization in Germany” and “Civil Rights and Civil Liberties” were the other subjects discussed at panel sessions. Prof. William Haber, former adviser on Jewish affairs to the American occupation forces in Germany, was one of the panel leaders on the German situation.
