The Michigan Legislature adopted today a resolution asking Congress to propose a Constitutional amendment providing for the right to recite prayers in public schools. After a half-hour of debate, the House of Representatives passed the measure which was previously adopted by the Senate.
During the debate, Sen. Milton Zaagman, a Grand Rapids Republican who sponsored the resolution, said that ultra-liberals were trying to force religion out of the nation. The main opponent of the proposal was Sen. Charles Blondy, Detroit Democrat, who cited the Supreme Court decision against such prayers and the opposition of various groups.
