Israel Foreign Minister Golda Meir said today, after meeting for over an hour with President John F. Kennedy at the “Winter White House” here, that they reviewed world problems, including Middle Eastern issues.
Mrs. Meir found the meeting “very pleasant” and she said she appreciated the opportunity of discussing matters personally with the President. Israel Ambassador Avraham Harman participated in the meeting, which lasted longer than expected.
Asked by reporters whether rockets were discussed, Mrs. Meir replied that “such unpleasant things were never mentioned.” Others sitting in at the coffee-table conference were Phillips Talbot, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and Myer Feldman, Deputy Special Counsel to the President.
(State Department sources in Washington said today that, despite Mrs. Meir’s denial, it was believed that rockets in the Middle East were among the topics discussed. Negotiations with Israel on payment and conditions of delivery of Hawk rockets sought by Israel have been under way for several weeks).
