Mideast tour of U.S. Secretary of State William P. Rogera will be the main items on the agenda. The talks are being held within the framework of the Franco-Soviet treaty which provides for periodic diplomatic consultations on the ministerial level. Schumann was accompanied by several experts on Middle East affairs. The agenda subjects were said to have been brought up last week during France-Soviet contacts here. French sources believe the positions of France and Russia on the Mideast are nearly identical. The two countries are said to share the position that any interim agreement with Israel to reopen the Suez Canal must be considered a first step toward a broader settlement under the Security Council’s Resolution 242. Prior to leaving Paris, Schumann conferred at great length with the French Ambassador to Cairo, Francois Puaux.
