The Rumanian Government’s ban on transit visas to Jews has resulted in complete stoppage of emigration from Poland, the Baltic states and parts of Germany, to Palestine through Rumania. The steamer Polonia, engaged in carrying passengers from Constanza, Black sea port, to Palestine, was forced recently to sail without passengers.
Following intervention by the Gdynia-America Line with the Rumanian Government, an agreement was announced today under which Rumania will allow transit of Jewish passengers under the company’s guarantee that they will not stay in Rumania, but will proceed immediately to Palestine. It is pointed out here, however, that the agreement does not solve the problem of Jewish travelers from Palestine to European countries, who also are not allowed transit visas by the Rumanian government.
