Jewish self consciousness is virtually non-existent in Italy and France, and the hope of a military Jewry is to be found only in the East European contries, Morris Weinberg, publisher of the New York Day (Tog), declared in an interview with the J. T. A. here.
Mr. Weinberg is touring Europe to study immigration problems.
“I am afraid” he said “that later generations of American Jewry will constantly loss more and more of their Jewish consciousness. In Italy and France, too, I have found a Jewry which is, nationally speaking, dead. But in Poland, Austria and neighboring countries, I have met a Jewish generation which represents our national future. Men like Deputy Gruenbaum, Senator Dr. Thon and others symbolize not only Jewish feeling but also Jewish power.”
Regarding the immigration question, Mr. Weinberg said it was not true to say that hundreds of thousands of East European Jews want to go to America. Apart from those persons who wish to join their relatives in America, there are in Eastern Europe about 50,000 to 60,000 young people who are industrious and capable and form a splendid element for emigration, he said.
