Minister Hits Naturalized Austria Jews

The Austrian Minister of Justice, Dr. Kurt Schuschnigg, leader of the Christian Socialist party, who today addressed a gathering of judges and officials charged with the administration of justice in Austria, declared that only “bodenstaensdigkeit,” native origin, should play a decisive role in the administration of justice. He said that Jews naturalized, but not born in Austria, should not be permitted to play prominent roles in Austrian law and justice.

After an official denial that numerus clauses have been introduced for Jewish boys in the Austrian Boy Scout Association, an official order was issued today by the All-American Scout Association, under the signature of Commander Kratsky, stating that “acceptance of non-Aryan members should be limited and headquarters consulted before the acceptance of non-Aryans.”

Professor Moritz Tandler, famous Viennese surgeon and member of the dissolved Socialist administration of Vienna, was arrested today by the Vienna police on his return from a six months’ trip to China. Professor Tandler was accused by the anti-Semitic press of Austria of having “overcrowded the Vienna municipal sanitary system with Jews,” while he was chief of the Department.

Professor Tandler went to China on the invitation of the Chinese government to act as an adviser on surgical questions. The noted surgeon insisted on returning to Austria despite the fact that he had been warned that he would be arrested at once. He told friends that he considered it his duty to return and share the fate of his Socialist comrades.
