The Ministry of Religion announced today that it has decided to restore to the Archbishop of Cologne church property near the Arab village of Tabgha which is registered as owned by him. The Archbishop’s representative–Bishop Meinhardt–recently arrived in the Jewish state to handle all necessary arrangements.
Meanwhile, negotiations between Roman Catholic ecclesiastical authorities and the Israel Government concerning Catholic institutions located on Mt. Zion in Jerusalem–the only Christian Holy Place in Jerusalem outside the Old City–were broken off several days ago, it was reported today. Neither Israel nor Catholic authorities would comment on suspension of the talks.
The Catholics reportedly are claiming war damages totalling $2,000,000–a sum which the Israelis hold is excessive. Israel military authorities are also reluctant to withdraw their forces from all parts of the Mt. Zion sector, which is considered a highly-strategic region overlooking the southeast corner of the Arab-held Old City.
