Dirksen “was a close friend of the Jewish people and always stood behind Israel.” He recalled that the Senator, at the 71st national convention of the ZOA in Washington in 1968, said that Israel should not become “another Czechoslovakia.” Mr. Torczyner said that the Illinois Senator followed events in Israel and was concerned with seeing that Israel’s security be maintained.
