Miss Pearl S. Bernstein, secretary to the Board of Estimate and Apportionment, and Mrs. Bernard S. Deutsch, wife of the Aldermanic President, were guests of honor at the open meeting held by the Godmothers’ League yesterday afternoon at the Day and Night Shelter for Babies, 115 East 101st street.
Miss Bernstein addressed the group in place of Mrs. Fiorello H. LaGuardia, Who was unable to appear because of a misunderstanding concerning the date.
“The work of organizations such as this,” she said, “has set the standard for government welfare activity. Beginning with the accomplishments of Sophie Irene Loeb and her associates, the attention of the government was called to social service. Gradually the administration became educated to this type of work, forced continually to raise its standards in accordance with the example set by private institutions.”
Mrs. Stella Hamburger, president of the league, introduced officials of several prominent women’s organizations of the city, who praised the work of their hostesses.
