The Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission condemned Israel today for bringing tanks and heavy artillery into Jerusalem in violation of the General Armistice Agreement between the two countries. The armaments were brought here Thursday for a rehearsal of the Israeli Independence Day parade scheduled for April 20 and were removed Friday morning.
The equipment, which the commission charged was in violation of the Armistice Agreement, included a Centurion tank, two Sherman tanks, two light French tanks, one minesweeper tank, two 155mm self-propelled guns and a 3.7 inch anti-aircrait gun.
Israel’s delegate to the Commission, Captain Shimon Levinson, contended that he had informed the Commission on March 7 that Israel intended to bring equipment into Jerusalem not only for rehearsal but for the parade itself. The Commission called upon Israel to “take the strongest measures to prevent the recurrence of such a breach.”
