Resolutions urging Mizrachi branches in the United States to build housing units in the Jewish state for “the expected influx of Jewish refugees from. Cyprus and Europe” and to invest capital in the American Eretz Israel Corporation, which extends loans to Orthodox workers in Israel; were adopted here last night at the closing session of the 28th annual convention of the Mizrachi organization of America.
The convention also resolved to “foster greater Sabbath and traditional observances among Jews in America.” Resolutions calling for the holding of regional conferences “for the purpose of outlining plans for strengthening Jewish religious life among the smaller cities unable to support their own spiritual leaders” were also adopted.
Delegates to the parley, representing Mizrachi chapters in 36 states, heard a report that within the past three weeks the Emergency-Food-For-Israel-Campaign of the organization has collected more than 250,000 pounds of kosher foodstuffs, which will be shipped to the Jewish state within a few days. During the past year the Mizrachi organization contributed close to $500,000 to the Jewish National Fund; it was also reported. Leon Gellman was re-elected president of the organization to serve his 12th term.
Judge Morris Rothenberg, president of the J.N.F., addressing the closing session yesterday, said the establishment of Israel does not necessitate the liquidation of existing Zionist groups. During the next 10 years, he predicted, more than 1,500,000 Jews would enter the Jewish state, making it necessary for the J.N.F. to purchase at least 3,000,000 dunams of additional land for resettlement and colonization programs.
