President Johnson was urged tonight to undertake a new initiative for peace in the Middle East, before a developing crisis erupts in that troubled area. In a telegram directed to the White House, delegates to the 39th annual convention of the Mizrachi Women’s Organization of America, which opened here tonight, specifically suggested that the President “in the bettered climate of America-Soviet relationships, “should propose to Soviet Premier Khrushchev as a first step towards total and general disarmament the establishment in the Middle East of a regional pilot plan of disarmament. “
Prior to the adoption of the resolution, Mrs. Eli Resnikoff, national president of the women’s religious Zionist organization, read to the 1,000 delegates, representing 50,000 members of the organization, a message of warm congratulations from the President, In his message, Mr. Johnson told the women:
“Your work during the past four decades is a shining example of unselfish devotion, to the homeless, the poor and the underprivileged. The dedication of Mizrachi Women to the children of Israel-their education, training and welfare-has helped that country assure a future generation of citizens devoted to the ancient, everlasting traditions of Judaism. It has helped bring closer the eternal prophetic vision of a world free from want and united in the belief of man’s equality before God. Your efforts deserve the thanks of all Americans.”
