Resentment among Chicago Jews at appearances in Berlin of Mme. Rosa Raisa, famed opera star and member of the Chicago Opera Company, and expressions of sentiment that Jewish residents of the city should not attend performances at which Mme. Raisa was scheduled to sing, led to issuance of a statement for her through the company’s press bureau, explaining her Berlin appearances.
The statement repeated Mme. Raisa’s assertion, made on her arrival in this country, that she had not been aware of the persecution of the Jews in Germany when she signed a contract to appear there and promised that she would never enter Germany again while the present Nazi government remained in power.
