The United Jewish Appeal raised $75,000,000 in the U.S. in the first half of this year, Henry Montor, director of the U.J.A., told press representatives here today. He predicted that the current drive would undoubtedly exceed the $120.,000,000 contributed by American Jewry in 1947.
To illustrate interest in the campaign, Mr. Montor said he had received a cable yesterday announcing that the Cleveland Jewish community would contribute $3,554,000 this year–an increase of $54,000 over 1948.
Mr. Montor described the United Jewish Appeal as the greatest philanthropic campaign in world history and said that by the end of 1949, American Jewry would have contributed $500,000,000 in four years. He urged Israeli organizations to cease separate fund-raising campaigns in the U.S., declaring that they would jeopardize the success of the 1950 U.J.A. drive. He confirmed reports that Henry Morgenthau Jr., general chairman of the U.J.A., and he himself would withdraw from its direction at the end of this year.
