With an income amounting to $584,943.94 and expenditures totaling $597,086.45, the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Montreal concluded a year of activities with a deficit of $12,142.51 according to the report tabled at the annual meeting of the Federation and its constituent societies.
To this, however, is added the deficit carried forward from the previous year, amounting to $39,122.68, so that the accumulated deficit is $51,565.19. This in itself is sufficiently serious, but the financial problem was increased by the Provincial Government’s discontinuing its customary grant of $15,000 to the Federation towards child care. This imposed upon the Executive Committee the necessity of keeping expenses down to the minimum.
FEEL PRIDE JUSTIFIED
The report states that it is note-worthy to record that for the fifth year in succession the federation has passed through another difficult period, undiminished in its prestige as the premier communal institution for the alleviation of suffering and distress.
The achievements of the past year, as disclosed by the reports of the Presidents of the constituent societies, justify the pride with which the city and the Jewish community regard the Federation, adds A. H. Jassby, president, who for many years has stood at the helm of Jewish Philanthropic endeavor.
Tribute was paid to Lieutenant Colonel Philip Abbey, chairman of the 1933 campaign; to his officers; to Mrs. Samuel Bronfman, chairman of the Women’s Division; and to the entire organization for their services and devotion throughout the annual fund-raising drive Tribute was given also to the executive director, E. G. F. Vaz.
Referring to the annual campaign, the report states that it failed to reach its objective, but this was not unusual inasmuch as a survey of Federation campaigns throughout the North American continent in the last year shows that in the majority of cases Federations fell short of their objectives.
