Paper Welcomes Ruling as Leading to Separate Jewish Schools (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)

Jewish leaders in Quebec declined today to comment on the decision of the judicial committee of the Privy Council, by which the appeal of Quebec Jews in the school question was lost.

When interviewed by the representative of the Jewish Daily Bulletin, Peter Bercovitch, Joseph Cohen and other leaders, who took active part in the matter, preferred to postpone comment until the full text of the decision is at hand.

The general opinion expressed here was that nothing more can be done in the matter, since the Privy Council has ruled that Jews are not entitled to representation on the Board of Protestant School Commissioners and since the right of Jewish children to attend the Protestant schools in the province, outside of the cities of Montreal and Quebec, is being questioned under the existing statute.

The “Jewish Daily Eagle,” Yiddish daily of this city, commenting editorially on the decision, expresses its satisfaction with the outcome. The paper writes: “We never expected any rights on the Board of Protestant School Commissioners. We only wanted to establish a principle of the right to establish a separate Jewish school system. The Jewish population here is not yet prepared to establish separate schools, but the judgment of the Privy Council is satisfactory since we can, if we wish, proceed with the establishment of our own schools.”
