Temple Emanu-El of Westmount, Montreal, has appointed a French Catholic scholar to a teaching post in its high school and school for adults this year.
Dr. Jean Ouellette, who obtained his doctorate at the Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati, the Reform rabbinical seminary, will hold the title of Scholar-in-Residence, according to Rabbi Harry J. Stern. The appointment, which is part of an interfaith program, was believed to be the first of its kind in North America. Dr. Ouellette, a graduate of Montreal University, recently returned from Israel where he participated in archaeological work.
