Representatives of all leading Jewish organizations in Montreal met at the Jewish Educational Institute to create machinery for the local drive for relief of stricken German and Polish Jewry, which is being launched on a Dominion-wide basis under the auspices of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
Lazarus Philips of the law firm of Jacobs and Philips is chairman of the campaign. He will be assisted by Samuel Hart and Joseph Levinson Sr.
Berating Canadian Jewry for lagging behind in its relief efforts during the last few years, S. Belkin, president of the eastern division of the Canadian Jewish Congress, pointed with pride to the role played by Canadian Jewry during the war and post-war years.
A gloomy picture of the Jewish situation in Europe was sketched by Rabbi J. H. Stern, who spoke of his recent European visit. “England is the only safe place in Europe today,” he said, describing his meetings with German refugees. English Jews have opened wide their doors to the refugees, he stated. He also declared that the present drive will not be the last, for the tragedy of Polish Jewry is as great as that of Germany Jewry. “The Polish Jews are being starved out of their economic positions,” he asserted.
Others who spoke were S. W. Jacobs, Lyon Cohen, Lazarus Philips, Benjamin Robinson and H. M. Caiserman, general secretary of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
A special names committee, with Lyon Cohen as chairman, has been appointed to solicit the larger subscriptions for the campaign. Others on the committee are J. Schaffran, Dr. David Weiner, David Krisch, Col. Phil. Abbey and J. H. Sparks.
