Monument for Jewish Victims of Nazis to Be Erected in Jerusalem

After a two-minute period of silent prayer, the Israel Parliament on Monday night passed its first reading of the Yad Veshem bill to give posthumous citizenship to the six million Jewish victims of Nazism in Europe.

Representatives of all parties spoke in support of the measure to provide a monument to the Jewish dead in Jerusalem. The only dissenting voice was that of a Herut Party representative, who castigated the Knesset and said that a body which had made peace with the Germans and which received reparations for Jewish blood was unworthy of erecting the monument. The Herut deputy proposed that the action be left to a new Parliament not responsible for the “shameful deal” with Germany.
