A monument honoring the memories of 55,000 Berlin Jews deported to death camps by the Nazi regime was unveiled yesterday in East Berlin, at the site on Grosse Hamburgstrasse formerly occupied by a Jewish home for the aged. Leaders of the East Berlin Jewish Community and some Communist officials of the city took part in the solemn ceremonies.
In 1942, the Gestapo took over the Home for Aged Jews on Grosse Hamburgstrasse, and made it into a deportation camp for Berlin Jews who were housed in that building prior to being shipped to their deaths at Auschwitz, Treblinka and Theresienstadt.
