A special working group has presented the Ministry of Cultural and Social Affairs with plans to erect a small monument to the memory of over 100,000 Dutch Jews deported by the Nazis during World War II, to serve “not only as a commemoration of the past but a warning for the future.” The monument would be located at Westerbork in the province of Drenthe, site of the former concentration camp where Jews were confined prior to being deported to death camps in Eastern Europe.
The working group, headed by the Governor of Drenthe province, noted that the site is located in an attractive region frequented by holiday-makers and tourists, few of whom have any idea what occurred there only ?5 years ago. In addition to the monument, the plans call for a permanent exhibition and information center.
