Despite the fact that ” belts are worn tighter” now in Israel, morale remains high among the people of Israel and “economic pundits who put on their best graveside manner because of the economic unbalance in Israel are premature as will as unrealistic,” Gershon Agron-Agronsky, editor and publisher of the Jerusalem Post, foremost English language daily in the Middle East, declared today at a press conference at the national headquarters of the State of Israel bond drive.
“There are shortages and the irritation that shortages induce, tut there is no starvation, no panic, no fear for the future and no intention on the part of the Israel Government to slow the revolutionary and healing process through immigration from the countries of the East and Eastern Europe that adds daily to Israel’s population,” Mr. Agron said.
“While nobody goes hungry and the clothing and shoe rationing provides a minimum for all, there is in Israel today a universal consciousness that sufferings caused by the shortages must be endured if Israel is to be geared to meet the buffetings of a world whose security is threatened,” he continued. “To this end, the population growth must go on intensified, as the threat comes nearer and the new population must be absorbed even more swiftly in a self-sustaining economy.”
