Reports from Lodz and Wroclaw reaching here today say that at least 20 Jews have been killed in recent days as they were attempting to escape from Poland into Germany.

The Jews were dragged from trains and cars between Lodz and Wroclaw by armed anti-government bandits and shot, the reports said. The victims were part of the mass emigration of Jews which has been proceeding steadily in the last few months and which was heightened by the pogrom at Kielce last week, where 41 Jews were killed.

Today several members of the Polish National Council called on August Cardinal Hlond, who yesterday issued a statement in which he said that the anti-Semitic outbreaks in Poland were “to a great degree due to Jews who occupy the leading positions in Poland’s government and endeavor to introduce a governmental structure that a majority of the people do not desire.

“In the fatal battle of weapons on the fighting political front in Poland it is to be regretted that some Jews lose their lives but a disproportionately larger number of Poles lose their lives,” the Cardinal added.
