“The ideals of religion are needed more than ever in these parlous times when men are leaping at each other’s throats in despair at their inability to solve their own economic problems,” declared Rabbi Louis L. Newman of Temple Rodeph Sholom, New York City, at the Friendship Service of the Hyannis Federated Church tonight.
Speaking on “The Outlook for Brotherhood,” Rabbi Newman said, “Religion preaches of brotherhood and peace. It teaches that those who take the sword shall perish by the sword, and step by step it witnesses the vindication of these classic principles. The present blood-letting among the nations must betoken terrible sins for which atonement must be made before amity is attained.
“America cannot teach mankind the lesson of liberalism and brotherhood if she permits herself to become a battleground for racial animosities. We must stand united against all attempts to subject America to foreign importations of prejudice. In the churches, in the community, all creeds, races and groups must join forces to keep America in these crucial hours true to the American faith of freedom.”
