More than 100 men and women prominent in Rumanian Zionist affairs have been tried behind closed doors during the past few months, it was learned here today from reliable sources.
The great majority of those brought to trial were sentenced to long prison terms on charges of treason and Zionist activities. Among those convicted during these trials are some 20 members of the left-wing Hashomer Hatzair, including Armand Mark, former member of the executive of the party in Rumania and of the OSE in Rumania.
Mr. Mark, who has been held in Rumanian prisons since 1950, defended himself by explaining his Zionist convictions and by bitterly attacking the oppression and torture used against Zionists. He was sentenced to a 20-year term.
