The latest available German figures which can be regarded as official show that 1,031 Reich newspapers have fallen victim to the ruthless press policy of the Nazi government since the rise to power of Adolf Hitler in January, 1933.
Not only have the Communist and Socialist organs been suppressed, but also a long list of newspapers which were the articulate voices of liberal interests. The 3,097 colorless papers under the thumb of Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels are but a ghost of their former robust selves.
Suspension of more than 1,000 papers is admitted by Dr. Karl Schneider of the German Institute of Newspaper Research at Berlin in an article in the current issue of the German press, which has just been received here.
Dr. Schneider calculates that every adult German reads a newspaper, but makes no mention of the well-known fact that no German reads anything in his newspaper but what Dr. Goebbels deems it wise to permit.
