Henry Morgenthau Jr, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, arrived here today after landing at Lydda airport. He said on his arrival in the Israel capital that “it is an exciting experience to be back in Israel. My present purpose is to see what is being accomplished by the U.J.A. and to also to discuss needs for the future,” he added.
Mr. Morgenthau said he hopes to meet with Premier David Ben Gurion and other members of the Israel Cabinet to review plans for Israel aid discussed at the recent economic conference here. The U.J.A. chairman also revealed that he plans to assume the responsibilities of chairmanship of the board of governors of the Hebrew University, in which post he will succeed Sir Leon Simon.
He told correspondents here it is his “firm belief that American Jews will receive sympathetically the new program for financial aid to Israel.” When Mr. Morgenthau’s plane landed at Lydda airport, a delegation comprising Labor Minister Golda Myerson; Berl Locker, Jewish Agency chairman here; and representatives of the Ministry of Defense, Foreign Ministry, Israel Army and Hebrew University was on hand to greet him.
Mr. Morgenthau is scheduled to return to the United States toward the end of October to take part in the Washington conference to be attended by representatives of all Jewish groups in the United States, at which time an Israel bond issue will probably be launched in the United States.
