The “imprisonment in new ghettos converted from former concentration camps” of the survivors of Hitlerism was attacked tonight by former Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr., who is chairman of the United Jewish Appeal.
Mr. Morgenthau delivered the chief address at a dinner at the Hotel Biltmore honoring Dr. Stephen S. Wise on the 40th anniversary of the Free Synagogue, which the founded. He cited the resurgence of Nazi ideas at home and the coddling of Nazis abroad, adding that the fight for a decent post-war world was just beginning and in that fight the leadership of Dr. Wise was needed.
Dr. Wise, who announced his “virtual withdrawal” from the Free Synagogue pulpit and the appointment of Rabbi Eduard Klein, spoke briefly, as did Rev. John Haynes Holmes, Frederick L. Guggenheimer, president of the congregation, Norman S. Goetz, president of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, and Rabbi Kelin.
