Representatives of Jewish communities in Morocco opened their national conference here today to discuss steps to improve the situation of the Jews in the country.
The conference will devote itself primarily to the formulation of a program for internal community work, including philanthropic activities. It is not expected that the conference will adopt political resolutions; however, discussions will be held on how to establish more friendly relations between Jews and Moslems in the country and how to improve the relations with local authorities.
(In Jerusalem, Dr. Nahum Goldmann told a press conference today that he is confident that the new ruler of Morocco, King Hassan II, will maintain the same attitude toward Moroccan Jewry as his father, the late King Mohammed. “Some time is needed before it will become clear to local police authorities that they must faithfully implement the Kings’ decision to allow Jews to obtain passports for emigration abroad, “Dr. Goldmann said.)
Meanwhile, it was announced here today that a Moroccan Jewish artist, M.Arama, has been appointed director of the School of Fine Arts in Casablanca. Mr. Arama, a well-known painter, has exhibited his work in Paris, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington. A former adviser on art to the Ministry of Trades, Mr. Arama is the first Jew to be appointed to the directorship of the school.
