The Moroccan Government has ordered the dissolution of Kadimah, the Jewish communal institution which handles emigration to Israel.
The police authorities informed Kadimah of the ban. Leaders of the group were reportedly told to halt all immigration activities, dissolve the institution and place its offices and a transit camp which it maintains at the disposal of Jewish welfare organizations. The police asserted that the emigration of Jews had depopulated the country to an extent harmful to Morocco’s economy.
The Jewish community, which currently numbers about 250,000, is perturbed over this development. The ban on Kadimah appears to mean the end of organized emigration. Presumably, all immigrants will have to apply individually for visas, a process which may take months and which may put great pressure on the individual applicant.
