The recent pogroms in French Morocco show how essential it is to keep Israel’s doors open to immigration at all times, Israel’s Minister of Transport Joseph Saphir declared here last night.
Addressing a large mass meeting here on behalf of the United Israel Appeal, Mr. Saphir told the audience that Israel belongs to Jews all over the world, and it was the responsibility of Jews in all countries to help consolidate the new State.
“Despite the present clouds in the Middle East,” he said, “the decisive factor in the future of the Jewish State is neither military nor political, but economic.” However, Israel must be strong in those other respects also, Mr. Saphir declared, adding that “it is in the interest of the Western Powers that Israel should be strong.”
