Eleven Moscow Jews have appealed to Premier Pierre Elliott Trudaeu to speak out on behalf of Soviet Jewish emigration rights during the visit to Canada of Soviet Premier Aleksei Kosygin which begins Oct. 17. The 11 signed a cable to Trudeau but it was not known whether the cable had been received. A copy of the text was sent to a Toronto resident who asked not to be identified. It read: “We, as Jews applying for permission to leave for Israel, ask you, one of the true noble men of our times, once more to raise your voice in defense of our right to live in our national home.”
Meanwhile, plans are underway in Montreal and Toronto to conduct a week-long demonstration while Kosygin is in Canada. Chartered buses have been arranged for Canadians wishing to go to Ottawa for a major demonstration on Parliament Hill when Kosygin visits the nation’s capital. On Oct. 21, a mass protest rally will be held in Montreal. These actions are being organized by the Montreal Action for Soviet Jewry and is sponsored by the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Canadian Zionist Federation.
