Israeli bookstores were offered today by the Soviet State Publishing House, in Moscow, copies of a new edition of Sholem Aleichem’s writings in Yiddish. This is the first time in ten years that Moscow has offered the book market any works in the Yiddish language.
(In New York, a bookstore specializing in Soviet literature, announced it had received a cable from the publishing house “Mezhdunarodnaia Kniga, ” of Moscow, offering the same book for sale in the United States. The cable described the book as a volume of 200 pages in length.)
A Moscow Radio broadcast today said that “the Soviet people have begun to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birthday of the great Jewish writer. Sholem Aleichem, who was born in March. Special programs are being held in the Soviet Union, with leading actors and elocutionists giving readings of Sholem Aleichem’s works. A five-volume collection of his works is being published in Moscow.”
