A 486-page book in Yiddish, the first work of contemporary writing in Yiddish issued in the USSR in many years, was published here today by the editorial board of Sovietish Heimland, the bi-monthly Yiddish magazine, the Soviet press agency Novosti reported.
The book is entitled “The Way We Live,” and contains sketches and travel notes by Yiddish writers, showing how Jews live today in the Soviet Union, their occupations and interests, and their participation in the general life of the country. Sovietish Heimland announced last summer that it would publish two books in Yiddish. “The Way We Live” is the first of those volumes.
(Competent observers of the Soviet scene pointed out in New York today that the issuance of the book in Yiddish is an obvious effort to counter charges around the world that the USSR is discriminating against Jews, especially in the cultural and religious field. No Yiddish volume of contemporary writings has been issued in the Soviet Union since 1948.)
