The first book in Yiddish on Soviet Jewish life to be issued in Moscow since 1949 appeared yesterday entitled “That’s How We Live,” it was reported by Tass, the Soviet news agency. It consists of articles by contemporary Yiddish writers in the USSR, presumably reporting on how well the Jews live in the Soviet Union. Tass’ report did not indicate the number of copies printed.
The new volume has been published by the editorial board of Sovietish Heimland, the Communist monthly issued in Moscow. Yiddish works were published in the Soviet Union in 1961 but they were reprints of stories in the classic Yiddish tradition written by Sholem Aleichem, I.L. Peretz and Mendele Mocher Seforim. Tass also reported that another Yiddish book, entitled “Horizons,” consisting of a collection of poetry by contemporary Yiddish writers, will be issued next month with a printing of 5,000 copies.
