A museum in memory of Peretz Markish, the Soviet Yiddish writer and poet who was killed during the Stalin purge of Jewish intellectuals, has been established in Polonne, Russia, the birthplace of the Jewish literary figure, it was reported here today from Moscow.
The Markish Museum, which is part of the general museum of the town, contains manuscripts and other mementos of his life and works. Accounts of the opening of the museum, which appeared in the Soviet press received here today, described the Yiddish poet as “tragically lost. ” During the Stalin purges, Markish was arrested, deported from Moscow, and never heard from again.
