The Moscow Radio, in a broadcast beamed specifically at North America, charged the United States today with concentrating units of its Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea opposite the Syrian coast. The announcer added American and British warships were en route to Israel. (The British Embassy in Israel announced yesterday that five destroyers would visit Haifa for four days late this month.)
The broadcaster warned that “there is an unstable, dangerous political situation in the Near and Middle East which may have the most dangerous consequences for international life as a whole.” He blasted as “hypocritical” British Foreign Office declarations that there was no threat to Syria when such “statements were accompanied by the dispatch of new British and American naval units to the shores of Israel.”
The warning that the State of Israel might be “liquidated” while the United Nations had its hands tied by a Soviet veto in the Security Council was sounded here by Sen. William F. Knowland of California. Sen. Knowland of California. Sen. Knowland voiced fear that the “forces of freedom and decency” might be immobilized if Israel were in danger during an address to a dinner of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York. The Californian urged action within the United Nations to end the Soviet veto power.
