Moscow Warns U.S. on Aid to Lebanon; Threatens War in Middle East

The Soviet Union today warned the United States not to intervene in the Lebanese crisis, cautioning that it might mean war in the Middle East. The warning was conveyed by Tass, the Soviet news agency.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Republic charged in Cairo that UAR subjects were being persecuted and tortured in Lebanon. Cairo hinted that it would take steps to “protect” its subjects. Beirut reported today the continued infiltration into Lebanon of UAR agents.

A large number of United States Globemaster transport planes have arrived in West Germany. Washington authorities declined to state the intended use of these planes, but they could be used to carry U. S. armed forces in Lebanon or to withdraw American nationals from that state. Additional police equipment has been dispatched to Lebanon along with tanks and other weapons.
