Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, left the United States on a world-wide survey of current refugee needs. Mr. Leavitt, a recognized authority on refugee aid, is a former chairman and now honorary chairman of the American Council of Voluntary Agencies for Foreign Service.
The JDC leader’s mission will include an assessment of refugee programs on behalf of Jewish migrants in Europe and Israel and the absorption of newcomers by the Jewish community of Australia, as well as an Inspection of general refugee conditions in Hong Kong and other areas. Mr. Leavitt will also attend the JDC country directors’ conference to be held in Geneva later this year.
On his survey, the welfare leader expects to meet with government personnel, leaders of voluntary agencies and officials of various Jewish communities. Upon his return he will report his findings to the officers and directors of the JDC and of the United Jewish Appeal, from which JDC receives the bulk of its funds.
