Mounting Moslem anger against Italy’s Albanian coup, combined with British troop elimination of the last prominent Arab terrorist leader, raised hopes in British circles here tonight of early improvement in the Palestine situation.
Denunciation of Italy’s invasion of Albania, only Moslem European country, was voiced on all sides here today by Moslem leaders, who viewed Rome’s coup as a possible wedge to be extended in the future against the Arab states at large. The bitter reaction was viewed as indirectly benefitting Britain, whose Palestine policy has been systematically attacked by the totalitarian powers.
Moslem wrath was reflected in strong statements by three prominent spokesmen. Sheik Kamel Kassab, president of the Committee of Ulemas (Moslem notables who interpret the Koran), branded the move as “the greatest atrocity in modern times.” Messages protesting the Albanian conquest were sent by the Association for Moslem Progress to Syrian Government authorities, to the League of Nations and to the local Italian consul. Sheik Hassan Chatti is president of the Association. Similar sentiments were expressed by Sheik Hachem el Khatid, president of the Moslem Education Association.
