Jews will be represented in the Cabinet which is formed in Morocco as a result of the agreement reached between the French Government and Moroccan nationalist leaders, it was revealed here last night in a statement issued by the Istiqlal Party, leading Moroccan nationalist group. The statement said that one or two seats on the Cabinet would be awarded to Jews.
The seating of Jews in the Cabinet would be a move to provide representation for an element of the Moroccan population, not as a concession to a religious minority, the Istiqlal statement said. This point is of particular significance since the status of Jews in Morocco has traditionally been that of guests under the protection of the Sultanate, not as subjects equal to the Moslem population. It is expected that full nationality will be granted Moroccan Jews in the constitution drafted by the new Moroccan Government, as it was by the Tunisian Government.
Meanwhile, the Moroccan nationalists have pledged adherence to the United Nations International Declaration on the Rights of Man, which guarantees fundamental legal, social political and religious rights to all men.
