The prohibition of non-Moslems to enter the cave of the Machpela, the place where the Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, were buried, according to the Biblical record, was lifted by the Moslem Supreme Council.
The cave is located near Hebron and is one of Palestine’s Holy Sites held by the Moslems. In the twelfth century the cave of the Machpela began to attract visitors and pilgrams. It is concealed by a mosque which was formerly a church built by the crusaders in the twelfth century and restored by the Arabs.
