The Third Committee of the General Assembly is considering a separation of its vote on racism and Zionism, it was learned today. Eleven Arab states, Cuba and Guinea demanded last week an amendment to the resolution before the Third Committee, the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, which would include Zionism as one of the ideologies to be condemned along with racism and colonialism. The vote on the amended resolution was postponed after opposition was voiced by the United States and the European Economic Community.
It was learned today, however, that the Third Committee is considering returning to the original resolution and then vote separately on the issue of Zionism. This development came after the Third World countries sought to assure a majority of votes for a resolution condemning racism and colonialism. A majority, they felt, could not be obtained with the amendment on Zionism attached to the resolution. It was not immediately known, however, when the Third Committee would vote.
