The Education Ministry will use busing to effect better Integration between school children of Western background and those of Oriental background, Education Minister Aharon Yadlin has informed the Knesset. “Our policy is one of promoting integration but executing that policy is a very delicate matter,” he said. He warned that if such measures as busing fail, he would introduce legislation to improve the situation.
Yadlin said that wider regional registration may be introduced next year. He said the greatest resistance to integrated education came from the State-supported religious schools where 80 percent of the enrollment consists of children of Afro-Asian background. He made his remarks in reply to an agenda motion introduced in the Knesset last week by Haviv Shimoni of the Labor Alignment, Shimoni charged school integration has been a failure up to now.
